I have a very similar device (only differences are black colour and it has a logo that says "America"). It works great BUT you have to change the headphones that come with it. You get a lot less static with some good ones. Haven't been able to hear any sex with it yet, but conversationscome just right.

The one linked to at Amazon UK is now out of stock and doesn't look like it will be back. Anyone recommend any specific ones from EBay Sellers or other sources that are fairly cheap, but still usable?

I'm shaking I'm so excited. Remember the girl I was talking about last year? I finally caught her having sex. I heard her pull up this morning and looked out the window and saw she was with a guy so I set up my listener. Nothing happened until mid-afternoon when I was about to start cleaning my apartment, but I noticed the AC was off so I decided to take a quick listen and sure enough they were fucking. Without the AC on, it was very, very clear. I easily heard the bed squeaking and her soft moans and even some kissing. Unfortunately the AC turned back on after about 30 seconds, and I didn't get to find my recorder in time to capture the clear action, but I'll upload the noisy bit anyway since you can still hear a little bit and I've been teasing you guys long enough. I really hope he stays awhile and that they're feeling in the mood later tonight when its cooler and the AC won't be on so damn much.

I lived in various apartments over the years and my biggest irritation was always furnace or air conditioners. I could always turn mine off as needed but that doesn't help me with 5 other units. Early spring and late fall were the best since it was more temperate.

If only I had equipment to capture sounds of my neighbors because written stories wouldn't do a lot of it any justice. Well except one maddening yet humorous one: I listened to a neighbor late one night and he asked her why she was wearing two pairs of panties. Her reply was muffled through the wall and I couldn't make out any words. Later I heard her say she didn't want anyone to hear so my adrenaline shot up and thought "here we go!". Over the course of TWO hours I heard something like little moans 5 times! I needed the air conditioning to kick on so I could take break. Seesh.

does this device record audio too? it says the usb cable is for transferring recorded audio?

has anyone used this without having to stand there pressing it against a wall?

It does not record audio. The little picture on it actually shows that the USB connector on it is for power AND for recording (with a little picture of a reel-to-reel tape to indicate that). However, I can't find any documentation at all for using that. My GUESS is that it outputs audio on a couple of those pins too -- so you could do some connector to get audio from it -- but I don't think it is DIGITAL at all.

So, until someone finds some documentation on it, it looks like that USB port is for charging only.

So, if you want to listen AND record, you'll need a splitter for the audio jack.

It would be nice to have something like this that would just sit tight against the wall without having to hold it there. So far, I haven't seen anything.

Note that these can be picked up from Chinese import places online now for under US$20 shipped. I just got one for that and it arrived today. Messed around with it a bit in my office and, so far, it seems like it is a decent device -- especially now that it is so cheap.

perhaps its not a good idea to use these, regardless it would be super noisy amplifying everything in the area....though I'm sure some audio geniuses could edit the background out.

That is the same as the one I mentioned above that I got. It is ok -- but I'm not loving it. It is very sensitive -- which means that if you move your hand AT ALL, you'll hear it LOUDLY. Makes it quite a bit of a pain to try to use for any extended period. Without a way to secure it to a surface without holding it, I don't see it being overly useful.

I tried to compare holding my ear against the wall to holding this against the wall and they were probably about the same -- with the device having the annoying problem of having to hold it there and getting bursts of insanely loud screeches if you bump it or anything.

The only upside I see is if you were using it to record -- then it beats the ear-against-the-wall, of course.

It may have its uses, but just not for me. I'll stick to hallway recording with a normal recorder instead of through-the-wall attempts.

I find the best thing is to jam it against the wall using a table or a heavy chair, but you also need to use something to "damp" between the device and whatever is holding it in place otherwise it just amplifies any movement in your room rather than the one next door.

One day I'll make a proper foam or rubber pad to do the damping, but until then I've used all sorts of things when I've been away, even a leather wallet!

Guys, these are intelligence tools.
If you get caught with those, shut down you for several years.
The whole is not worth much.

I use it to find water leaks behind walls -- works great for that.

The fact that some people might use it for nefarious purposes is a shame.

Just wanted to recommend a device for listening through walls. I've tried a couple, including the small, cylindrical one, that says "America" on it - a cheap, flimsy, Chinese made toy - not worth the money. So I finally found something that really works, you can find it on Amazon, http://www.amazon.com/Microphone-Listen-Through-Contact-Listening/dp/B0032EXNBE/, or you can just google "Listen Through Walls Pro". Great sound quality and I hooked it up to my PC for recording without any problems. The best thing, unlike the other devices I tried, I didn't actually have to press it against the wall all the time. The contact microphone piece is separate from the amplifier unit, so you could just tape it to the wall, and set the small amplifier unit on the floor. Will be posting a few recordings made using it soon.

While we're posting amazon links.. You can use some poster wall gum putty like this:

and it will make those hand-held 'America' devices stick to walls, ceilings, you name it.

If it has not fallen off by itself, you might need to remove the sticker around the 'tip' in order to made the adhesive stick to the device.
