Any ideas on how to hold it against the ceiling without using adhesives? My best idea is to use a couple of dowel screws and a pair of nuts and washers to fasten a small piece of wood to the ceiling. That way I could take most of the setup down when I have company

Suction cups with a string tied to device?
Duct tape?
Place it firmly against the wall with a heavy object (chair, etc)?
Possibly magnets glued/epoxied to it, but not sure how it would affect the device or if there are any metallic objects it would stick to.

At the old times I used a stethoscope and I fixed it with a couple of dowel screws and a pair of nuts and washers to fasten a small piece of aluminium sheet. I pull apart the rubber tube before the "Y" metal tube and put an electret microphone capsule into the rubber tube.
It was necessary to put a coin between the wall and the membrane of the stethoscope. With the one screw contention I could "tune" the system.

What I was wright: it works only with a coin between the membrane and the wall, because the memran of the stethoscope is inner thanthe surface. It has a metallic edge.
And my experience was the touch-noises and my circulation of the blood are also was audible too.
Because of this I fixed it onto the wall with screws.
It was nessesery to using a microphone capsule, cause my ear-hole was inflamied because the (plastic) end of the stethoscope.

Painters tape is your friend for contact mic's. You can tape them to the wall and not leave a mark.

Painters tape is that blue 2" wide masking tape with the weak adhesive. Wally world should have it.

I have the F999B wall listening device . I can not figure out how to use.. I get FM radio sounds in it all the time. I hear clear through the walls but a lot of interference .And i need to figure out how to use as a recorder!!

I use a listening device. Can't remember where I got ut from but the box has 'the ears listen' on it. If you get the right technique then it's fuckin awesome!
Might also be worth niting that there are now apps that you can use on your phone. Google returned a fairly high rated one called ear spy, but this depends on your phone!
