alot of these files have static, are there any free online equalizers you can downloud to minimize hiss

I just Googled "free eq software" and came up with lots of stuff. I don't know what would be genuine or best, but it's worth a look. The equalizer I use comes with the software I do video editing with, so I haven't tried any free stuff. Have a look in the board's "software" section, there's advice on free stuff in there.

I'm not sure an equalizer is the best tool for static, but if it works, then fine. Having said that, I find that getting rid of the top and bottom end frequencies makes for better listening and looses nothing of the important sounds, so I usually use eq first. For what it's worth, the settings I always apply automatically are as follows;

0 - 125 Hz set to -24dB
160Hz set to -10dB
200Hz - 10kHz left at 0dB
12.5 set to -10dB
16 - 25kHz set to -24dB

The figures are obviously based on the equalizer I use. And if anyone has got any comments or suggestions for better settings I'll be happy to hear them.

I discovered if you take some time to really study the features of the free ""Audacity"" program, it can do a pretty good job cleaning and filtering. The noise reduction filters and equalization filters in Audacity are pretty good for a free program. But, if you don't take enough time to practice and study how the filters really work...... you can easily mess up your file and make people sound like a bunch of robots or chipmunks chatting! There is a very fine line between the proper amount of filtering and over-filtering the living daylights out of a file. It takes time and practice to get the limits just right.

And you just don't go tinkering with the original file either. Make a copy of it, then set that file where you will not mistake it for the working copy. Then you may tinker to your heart's desire without ruining the original.
