Audio,
sorry i didnt check this thread earlier! I bough the Olympus LS3

However, I'm having issues, I'm getting a lot of hiss and muffling sounds in the background when there really shouldn't be. I did a comparison with my older dictaphone and that yielded better results. I dont know if its because I have the noise filter set to 300Hz or not but yeah having some difficulties at the minute :-(

Sounds more likely that it's a product of noise reduction rather than the low cut filter being set to 300 Hz, but it's hard to say for sure without hearing it. Can you post an example of the noise you're talking about? Doesn't have to contain anything sexy, it'd just be easier to figure out what's going wrong.

Yay, glad it's sorted. Noise reduction isn't a flat out no-no if done well, but those DSP chips in the hardware recorders don't count as doing it well just yet. As you've heard, record as cleanly as posible with the gear you have and the noise reduction can come later if necessary. :)

Hi All,

I used to use expensive recorders, mostly Olympus VN 700 series which cost upwards of £60 a piece. But after losing a couple of these (left outside hotel room doors) I switched to using cheap USB recorders from Amazon (£7.99 or so). Frankly, the quality's just as good, they're very difficult to spot (I've had a couple of recordings where I've heard the room occupants walk right past them) and if you should lose them then it's not such a horrifying financial loss.

In my earlier days in this game I almost made the most amazing capture of a couple of lesbians in a hotel room together. I could hear their moans from my room a few doors down the corridor. But unfortunately, as I walked past their room to recover my VN 712 I saw a hotel porter picking up the recorder so I walked right past him and headed downstairs - £75 lost along with one of the greatest captures of my career :( !

That really doesnt sound good at all!

While we're on the topic, I have a hotel stay coming up - how do you place your USB's? Or, where do you place them? Like right under the door or just at the bottom of the door where the gap is?

amazing Story!

@Mechanic

really cool that you bought the same Olympus as I have. The Problem you mention is because of the noise reduction or the micro sensitivity. you have to ckek the Settings for that and reduce micro sensitivity or more noise reduction.
