Baby Monitors ?

Its a known fact that one remote way of capturing sounds is via a scanner which can receive all manners of low powered devices.
One such device that it can receive are baby monitors - these things can transmit up to a mile away and act as a microphone into the houses of the people who have them installed.
Through my experience it takes extreme patience/chance to actually capture any sounds though and more often than not all you receive is peoples noisy houses or arguments.
Juts putting this out there to see if any fellow members have ever tried to capture sounds via a scanner and what type of success you have had?
There are about 5/6 in my area but as yet, nothing has transpired
