Upstairs neighbors. Contact mic (Last Update 12.07.2026)

Post by Mindfuck420 »

My first recording.

Even though this is my first recording, I approached it quite seriously. It didn't turn out exactly as I expected, but the result still pleased me.

A new neighbor moved in upstairs. A guy comes to visit her a couple of times a week. She looks about 25 — a short brunette. He’s a tall guy around 30. Russians.

The building has very thick concrete walls from an old construction, and in all the years I’ve lived here, I’ve never heard anyone. The soundproofing is excellent. But a month ago, I heard an interesting rhythmic creaking of a bed for the first time. At first I thought I was imagining it, but a few days later it happened again.

It’s hard to hear through the wall, so I went with a different solution. I bought a sound recording device with a contact microphone (HY929). There’s a very tall wardrobe in my apartment with about 15 centimeters of space between the top and the ceiling. I was able to press the microphone against the ceiling there.

The device is cheap but very sensitive, so the recording has a lot of noise. I tried cleaning up the audio on my computer — it sounds better, but a lot of the useful sound disappears as well. So I decided to leave the file as it is.

About the audio:
At one point you can even hear a squelching wet sound. There’s a lot of overloaded/distorted sound because the bed is banging directly on the floor, and therefore straight into the sensitive microphone (turn the volume down). One weird thing near the end of the recording — you can hear the second girl moaning (were they watching porn???)

Hope you enjoy it

Thank you very much, I'm glad you liked it! It's not a house — I recorded it from an apartment on the 2nd floor, with neighbors on the 3rd. It's an old 4-story Soviet-era building, like a box with very thick, strong concrete walls and ceiling. :D

Thank you! I'm 99% sure there will be more recordings!

A couple of days ago I ruined one recording because I'm still figuring out the equipment. I cranked the Gain way too high and started recording. As a result, the sound came out extremely overloaded and completely unlistenable. What upsets me the most is that their session was incredible — you could even hear the screams just from being in the room... I checked several times that the recording was on, but in the end it was ruined anyway...

It's already been 2-3 days since then. I hope the neighbor has a guest today or tomorrow

Hi! Great job! Tell me, what tool did you use for the cleaning? Was it AI, or some other software?

I installed iZotope RX and Audacity and tried to do something myself, but I still haven’t figured out how to use them properly and didn’t like the result. I know both programs have a noise analysis feature where you select a segment of the recording, it creates a precise noise profile, and then you can filter the entire track based on that profile.

I could record pure noise at night in complete silence, so I can make a perfect noise profile and clean the recordings properly. If you know about this, please tell me how and in which program it’s best to do it. Thanks!

Oh, sorry. I wrote my message first, and then I found your answer on the forum to the exact same question. It's a complicated technology, I won't be able to replicate it

Would it be better if I periodically send you recordings for cleaning? I'll continue studying the software — maybe I'll manage something — but your results will definitely be better 8)

I'll make combined recordings where the first 5-7 seconds will be pure noise without any impurities for analysis. Will that be enough?

Don't mind getting the audio as it either anyway.

If I knew how clean them I would help you out lol

UPDATE

I figured out the equipment settings a bit and made a small modification. Now there's not as much noise, and I can increase the volume in the headphones to a comfortable level.

I was a little late for the moment they started, but the result satisfied me.

Goodness, this is so good! Could you please share the specific equipment and apps that you have used? I have a contact mic ad well, but cannot figure it out yet - still getting no sound, even though it reacts to me tapping to it

Thank you for sharing, this is an amazing audio. Absolutely incredible. Would you say the H929 is good for people that have no prior knowledge in recording or contact mics? It seems to be extremely efficient, despite the "soviet style walls"

Hi! Thank you!
This sounds exactly like what happened to me when I first bought the device. It turned out the wrong mode was selected. That's exactly how the probe mode behaves.

The device is called HY929 Leak Detector / wall microphone. There are different kits available; I got the basic one. It includes: the amplifier itself, the microphone (a cylinder with a small pin on a spring in the center), a probe (a thin metal tube with a hole that can be inserted into hard-to-reach places, for example when looking for noises in a car, under a door, or into a hole in the wall), and headphones.

This kit is suitable for listening but not for recording. That's why I separately bought a module that plugs into the amplifier. It's called the HY929 Recording Module. You insert a flash drive into it, and it plugs into the amplifier. It has a record button. The module automatically saves recordings in MP3 format to the flash drive.

The module is cheap, poorly assembled, and works strangely — the indicators aren't always accurate — but I learned how to use it since there weren't many other options. There's also the option to record sound through the headphone output directly into a smartphone, but I haven't tried that yet. I'm waiting for the necessary cables and adapters to arrive (I ordered them almost immediately after noticing the module was acting up). At the moment, though, the cables are no longer needed — everything works as is :D

The device has a mode switch. Middle (for thin and medium walls), Powerful (for thick walls), and a probe mode. There's also a volume knob on the amplifier — that's what initially misled me. It's not just volume; it's Gain, so you shouldn't crank it up too high.

Press the microphone firmly against the surface (be careful with it — once pressed, don't move it! The thin rod in the center will break if you slide the microphone across the wall). Press it, then secure it with something — furniture or some kind of prop (like a shower curtain rod, for example). Mode: middle. Gain slightly below the middle. That's all the settings. I didn't process the files in any way

The microphone cable and the amplifier itself basically act like antennas, so they pick up electromagnetic interference (EMI) and any noise from household appliances, even on other floors. A neighbor's robot vacuum moving around creates noise; a turned-on hair dryer creates noise again. I fought the EMI and mostly won. Ferrite Beads/Rings — clip them onto the wires and they almost eliminate EMI (not 100%, but they help a lot). You've probably seen those cylinders on old USB cables. Also, keep the amplifier and microphone away from any wires and devices. Even Bluetooth headphones lying nearby create noise :x

And another important thing is the wall material. Thin wooden walls or drywall = good recording, and you don't need to crank up the gain. Thick foam block walls = you'll most likely have problems with recording. In general, you just have to test it.
