I suspect these are the often asked, perennial questions, “where, when, how?”.
My own observations are as follows.
But first I must state that I am probably in the minority in this forum as I am a woman, and not a hot blooded male as I suspect most of you are. I am also bi, and it is that aspect of my sexuality which enjoys hearing couples, particularly other women, having sex.
Additionally, I do not feel comfortable being pro-active and actually recording what I hear; somehow that doesn’t sit comfortably with me and besides, I get a much bigger kick from hearing it “live” so to speak.
I live and work in the U.K. and my work necessitates I travel extensively through most of Southern England, staying away 3 or 4 nights each week. I have kept a kind of “secret diary” of my experiences, and having read some of the posts on here relating to the title of this post I felt that you may be interested in some of my own experiences.
Firstly, a general observation is that location and timing can play a huge part in having a successful experience. For example, establishments frequented by holiday makers, those flying off on holiday, couples attending a wedding, a show or some entertainment or such like often mean that couples will be in the “right mood”.
Over the years I have noted in my diary some 84 experiences of hearing sex of one sort or another whilst staying in hotels/motels.
Over half (51) were in locations which could be categorized by the above.
(BTW: I don’t doubt many people will report on having heard sexual activity whilst staying in one or other of the major airport hotel chains. For my part this has not often been the case, in fact a real rarity. I have had far more success staying in lesser establishments.)
I find older hotels, or Bed and Breakfast establishments to be quite good as the sound insulation is often minimal. In addition, rooms tend to be closer together, more compact, the furniture (i.e.bed) more inclined to noise, and the fit of doors and windows less than perfect. Additionally, one is less likely to find corporate guests, business types etc staying in such places. My mantra is not to think and book like a business person, but to think where a couple might book for a night/week/romantic stay etc. Where would I stay if I was with my partner? That approach.
I will usually try and identify an older hotel/B&B or similar which strikes me as being one which a couple might use when in that area, rather than look for a comfortable business hotel. That said, I do not rule out boutique or “character” hotels if they look likely to attract couples and are not too new or clinical. “Character” can often mean ill-fitting doors and other aides to listening pleasure.
Being a regular client means I often get to have the room I ask for – especially when booking in advance – and having sussed the establishment out on earlier visits I know which rooms offer the best chance of listening pleasure. Wherever possible, I book a room sandwiched between two doubles, I avoid having a single room, being next to a twin bedded or family room. Where ever possible, and where the above criteria have been met, then an added bonus is a room with an inter-connecting door (locked of course) with an adjacent room.
I’ve also, rather shamefully, and when time allowed, watched guests in the lobby and sussed out which rooms couples collected/dropped off keys for. This would give me an idea as to whether or not the hotel employed any ‘segregation’ – meaning single business types on one floor/section, couples somewhere else.
This came about as I realised that in a couple of the smaller establishments I visit, the owners tended to book couples into specific rooms first. Single guests tended to get put into other rooms. The knowledge of which rooms tend to get filled by couples, and in what order, helps me decide which room to ask for. Of course I don’t always get the room I want, but I do so on the majority of occasions.
All that said, I regularly stay in one particular B&B and choose to have a room at one end of the first floor corridor, at the front of the building. An odd choice you may think, as it has only one room adjacent to it, and is slightly smaller than the others in the building, especially it’s adjacent neighbour. However, I quickly discovered two important qualities – the first being that the owners like to put couples in the room next door as it is the largest letting room, and has a good view from the windows. The second quality is that there is an inter-connecting door, the fit of which leaves a great deal to be desired. It is no exaggeration to say that there is over an inch gap at the base, and about a quarter of an inch gap at the top where the door has warped away from the frame. . Oh, there’s a third reason – that the bed is against the dividing wall. (I've enjoyed 6 experiences in this establishment.)
I find Summer time is best, but not during school holidays (unless you can find somewhere where children aren’t usually booked in as well.) Some 60 or so of my experiences have been during the period April thro Oct incl.
Lastly, and a little off topic insofar as it is not my own experience, a couple of things I’ve heard of concerning the “how”.
I heard tell of a guy, a regular traveller and a frequent client at specific establishments, who used the fact that he could be fairly confident of getting the room he requested to record activities in his absence. I do not profess to know, or understand, the mechanics of how this was achieved save to say that he seemingly secreted some sort of recording device into, or behind the bed headboard, collecting it on his subsequent return visit later in the week.
This has always struck me as being rather a nasty thing to do, but that aside I am still doubtful that any device would have the power to last long enough to warrant this approach. I have read of a case where a device was secreted into a mains socket (and collected later) but in that instance the device was a transmitter (the receiver, and “owner” being in another room in the hotel) and got it’s power from the mains.
I have also heard of a radio controlled car, much as you see kids playing with, being rigged up with a sensitive microphone on a vertically extendable arm & attached to a low power transmitter. This was used (allegedly) to good effect at night on caravan sites. The “owner” of said device would control the vehicle from a safe distance lest he be suspected of improper behaviour himself (!), and target a suitable caravan. Finding such, the vehicle would park under the van (under the bedroom I suppose?) extend the microphone arm and transmit back to the owners van. As an aside, he evidently avoided allowing the vehicle to go near tents as whilst the vehicle was quiet enough in itself, the thin fabric of a tent might still have allowed the occupants to hear it.
Hope some of this has been of some interest.
Happy hunting you guys – and any girls out there! Lol.

Re: Observations on Where, When, How
Thanks for the post, it's really well written and fascinating to read. I'm intending to post soon with some thoughts on my own why and how, so I'll not mention any of that now, but some of your comments touch on what I feel are related subjects. An example being the question of live or recorded.
One thing we sort of have in common is the diary, although I have never kept a diary as such, but I have written fairly detailed accounts of some voyeur experiences. I find that when I re-visit them some years later it is almost like experiencing it again.
The last bit about recording devices made me smile and although I'm going to a caravan park soon, I'm not thinking remote control. I will mention in my how and why I use recording and also about live sound experiences, which I agree are great.
Thanks again for the post.

Re: Observations on Where, When, How
Hey Nats, world-class elaborated contribution, wish I could write like that in English too.
Unlike you or emmpet I don´t have a diary but I always prefer live to recorded. Recording for me is what written thoughts might mean to you, preserving memories and even more important to me, sharing with the community.
The most valuable part for me are your experiences in hotels. I am not staying in hotels often enough to know which specific rooms are best or to get the room I ask for but my lessons learned are very similar to yours. Business hotels are rarely interesting, smaller, privately owned hotels in tourist towns have been my best spot so far.
btw. there are some tools that allow recordings for a whole week.
Thanks for your post!

Re: Observations on Where, When, How
Wow, amazing tips.
Unfortunately I travel a lot in business hotels - and yes, true there's very little chance ... unless you catch a boss with his secretary or personal assistant.
At least I do avoid rooms near kitchen, elevator and above restaurants.
But ... most people (and so do I) book in advance - I never thought about staying in the lobby and chosing after I spot a couple.
But again, nice tips - so Germany - Stuttgart, hotels near Musical should do ... in autumn ...
Thanks

have you had any luck in the recent past, did you possible make any recordings?
