Anybody got any tips on items that can best used to hear through walls? Is the glass on the wall the best easy, homemade device for listening through walls or does anyone have any better recommendations? Looking for non specialist, easy to obtain items for hearing neighbors
Thanks

Re: Homemade Listening?
They do make a 'contact microphone' used for plumbers/electricians/bomb detectives.. but it runs around $200. As for cheaper alternatives... i believe there are some do-it-yourself type modifications that can be done (with discount radio shack type equipment, etc).. but requires some technical expertise ..and no idea as to the performance.
Personally, i gave up on obtaining any equipment like that.. since while you can hear thru-wall sounds.. it is usually accompanied with numerous other 'white noise' sounds/interferance (water flushing, electric 'hum', vehicle traffic, wind sound, etc). If i were in an apartment or flat with a 'controlled' environment, and had a target of opportunity (loud neighbors).. i might be persuaded to further pursue a gadget of this type.. but for hotels/motels.. just too many variables (some hotels have reinforced walls or better insulation.. others not). I will usually use 2 methods to record 1) a handheld mp3/voice recorder (placed near the door or an area that will get good sound or 2) a shotgun mic (if there is an open window/door gap that you can target for good sound). Aside from those 2 methods, i have not had very good results.. unfortunately, unless you have super-quality sound mixing/recording/amplifying equipment.. your ear will pick up sounds that typical mp3 players/voice recorders will not.. just not enough sensitivity and filtering in the devices.
