Recording through a wall?

Am i correct in thinking that a recording device placed against a wall (say a hotel bedroom) will not pick up what you can hear with your head pressed against the same wall? I tried the other night. I could hear things, but when i played the recording back all i can hear is me moving from time to time. Or is there a device that will overcome this?
