Parabolic microphone?

Post by stuffedpanda »

Does anyone know about good parabolic mics or if they work for open windows or balcony talk?

You can make your own with a mic or a recorder with a mic on it and an old 18" round DTV dish antenna.

Hold the mic in the center of the dish while you point it as a noise source a ways away, and slowly move the mic away from the dish. Listen to the output. When it is loudest you are at the focal point for audio. Measure how far out that is and make some supports to hold the mic in that position. I have had good luck with epoxy (5 minute to tack than 24 hour to do the real bond) and slats made of out the thin bamboo strips from bamboo curtains.

You can also use an old "big" dish, one of the 10-12 footers but they are not exactly discreet pointing right at someones bedroom window.

They work real well though.
