I was staying in a hotel (McMennamin's Edgefield location outside of Portland), and while walking back to my room at night I stopped to read one of the historical things on the walls and after a second or two heard the most beautiful sounds coming out of a nearby room.

I was with my girlfriend.

I too had a missed opportunity last night in Columbus GA. Stayed at a newer Holiday Inn Suites and the above room started getting busy with lots of rhythmic bed sounds . As luck would have it, I turned on my recorder just as their AC unit kicked in I could still hear them (barely) as she started to moan but then MY AC and stupid frig compressor kicked in and then I couldn't hear crap. I've never experienced an AC which would run for an entire cooling cycle once started, even when turned off or temp raised at the start...15 minute cycle too. I could still hear what sounded like screams, but not sure. When the AC units finally shut down, so had they...all quite upstairs. REALLY ruined the rest of my night. Replayed the recording this morning and all I could hear is fan and compressor noises...Sounded like a freak-in hurricane! Thought about getting up and posting next to their door, but this place has 4 cameras posted on each floor for "security." Just NOT my night or trip.

Was at the US Grant in San Diego, CA last fall... Weekend - conference started Monday and I went out early with my significant other ( San Diego is fantastic -- stayed the first few days In la Jolla - went up the coast -- spent another day on Mission Beach)...

The Grant is Downtown -- classic old luxury hotel -- translation: elegant rooms with somewhat thin walls. Sunday morning, I wake to the sound of the couple in the next room -- reverse layout (adjoining rooms) - the head of their bed butted up against the wall right above our heads.

I've been meaning to get a digital tape recorder, or something, for a couple of years now. One of my housemates used to have this boyfriend, and by blind luck they were unusually sexually compatible. My room was across the hall from hers, and I'd wake up at all hours of the night (and sometimes the day) and hear her moaning. I live in the country and I am used to it being very quiet.

I can not tell you how much I hate those jet engine loud HVAC units in most hotels. Even in the good hotels. Christ. Loud enough to wake the dead.

I found that as soon as I check in and get to my room if I crank it all the way you want it, ie cold in the summer or warm in the winter, and unplug everything that makes any noise, than go out and have dinner and let it warm up or cool down... When you come back you can turn your HVAC unit right off. Your room will stay quite nice for a long time as it is a semi thermally controlled surrounding, and some of your excess heat/cold will effect the rooms around you. This helps keep *their* HVAC unit from kicking on as often. Also when you call it a night, you can actually get a decent nights sleep.
