I'm very frustrated about all the old recordings I seem to have lost, or can't find yet, so am trying to think of new opportunities for recordings. One possibility that's coming up, is a stay at a caravan next month. When I stayed there last year I did hear a few sex sounds while I was walking past a caravan latish one night. I couldn't linger though, as it was a fairly well lit area and it would have been too obvious.
This year I'm going to take my small minidisk recorder with me. The intention is to target a caravan near mine, with a couple staying in it, or even a single female and observe it at night. If there's a light on in the lounge area I might consider recording in case there's anything, but my main focus would be when that light goes off and a bedroom light comes on. I'm thinking of leaving the recorder nearby, moving away from the area and collecting it later.
has anyone any tips for the best place to leave the recorder and mic, as in under the van or on the grass by the side of the window? Better still, if anyone has any suggestions for easy ways of attaching the mic to the side that would be an interesting too. Any tips or thoughts would be very welcome.

Caravans can be great for recording!
Leaving your minidisc nearby is one good option but it can be an expensive one if someone else finds it. A shotgun mic could be another option if you find a target next to your place.

Thanks for the reply. Leaving the minidisc isn't too big a risk in the circumstances, but it does mean you have to wait to retrieve it and there might not have been any action when you do.yeppie wrote:Leaving your minidisc nearby is one good option but it can be an expensive one if someone else finds it. The idea of a shotgun mic is a good one, as it would enable easier searching in the dark, but the old funds are very much on the low side at the moment.
I have heard that an alternative to a shotgun is a parabolic dish mic. I wouldn't mind trying to make one, but I can't seem to locate anywhere that you can buy the dishes. If anyone does know, point me in the direction and I'll see if the limited funds can stretch.

I got one of those parabolic mics and I would think about giving it away but it has the downside of being conspicuous. Nowadays my Olympus LS-5 does it for me if the target isn´t to far away.

Interesting! The conspicuous factor wouldn't really be an issue, as this would be at night and with very few people around. I also have a bit of a credible cover story too. How well does the dish work? Any information on where to get the dishes, if it's worth a try?yeppie wrote:I got one of those parabolic mics and I would think about giving it away but it has the downside of being conspicuous.

I will send a pic of the device later. Cannot really say how good it works as I only played around years ago and never actually recorded anything. But from what I remember, it enhanced listening to distant sources. I even don´t remember where I bought it, could have been on Ebay.

As promised, a few pics of the mic. There is a headphone jack on the side and a built-in spyglass so you can watch while listening. As there are rec and play buttons, there should also be some kind of internal memory.

Thanks for the info and pics. I have been looking and this is some of the stuff I've found They are available on Ebay from abroad at around £33 up and here's a link to one that's 48.99EUR. It also shows the manafacturer. You're right about the internal memory by the way, but it doesn't allow much recording.

If you Google or search Ebay for parabolic microphones, there are slightly more sophisticated ones at around £120 up but they are all USA based and the postage is a lot. There's even a dish only, but again with postage it's too much for what it is in my opinion.
There is one that might be available in this country called the Amberwood Reflector and here's a link to the site (Wildlife Sound Recording Society) with pics and reviews on various shotgun mics. I am going to follow up the Amberwood one to see if it is available and if so, how much?

I have seen some vids with guys demonstrating their quite expensive shotgun mics and they seem good, but not as impressive as I would hope for. From the sound of it the parabolics perform better, but are far more obvious! As a final note, there are some interesting DIY ones on YouTube.
If I make any decisions I will update with whatever the results are.

Caravan and Camping recordings are some of my favorites because there is only a piece of tent between you and the action....Have you bought the parabolic microphone, i am not sure what I shall think about them and if they are useful?!
