Trying to record on holiday!

Post by emmpet8 »

I'm away in a caravan at the moment, so chances to post or visit the site are infrequent to say the least. Before leaving for the holiday I rigged up what I thought was a neat device for recording opportunities. It's a discreet black box with a minidisk recorder and mic fitting snugly inside. I had to modify things a bit though, as I didn't realise minidisk recorders near a mic are quite noisy. When I'm back in September I'll take photos of my device and post them.

Since arriving I've been trying to identify possible target caravans for likely recordings, looking mostly for couples without children, as they don't need to be so quiet in the close confines of a caravan. I was quite optimistic of getting some interesting recordings when I got here, but the results have been really disappointing to say the least. The day after I arrived a great looking early twenties couple arrived at a caravan very close to mine. The following day was very hot and it was a still night (I think we used to call them summer!). Seemed like the perfect start for recording activities.

Using Hi Md mode I can record for 7.5 hours, so I left the recorder going under their bedroom window. I did pop out a couple of times and eventually saw their bedroom light come on. I then had a few glasses of wine and waited until the early hours. After retrieving the recorder I was very hopeful. I was even more hopeful, when on the recording, I heard them enter the bedroom and her say; "Open the window!" There followed some quite clear chat and laughter, then silence. I had nearly two hours of recording after the window was opened, but I didn't hear another thing.

Since that first try I have made a total of five more attempts and got nothing. After the couple near me left, I spotted a stunning girl with a guy at a caravan some distance away, so I've been trying with them and as yet nothing. I hear them enter the bedroom, some slightly muffled chat and then nothing. I have to wait until it's quite late and dark before I can leave the recorder and mic, as I don't want them discovered and to loose them. I'm going to keep trying, but I'm starting to wonder if caravanning couples fuck in bed at night!

Today it's forecast to be be really windy, so I might not bother as there will be a lot of wind sound and rain is forecast overnight too. If I do get anything in the ensuing weeks I will share and post when I get back. At the moment though I'm starting to wonder if my luck will change!

I've been very busy since returning from holiday, but hope to start posting again soon.

This is just an update really on the holiday attempts I mentioned from a caravan, but a rather disappointing update. In total I spent 30 nights in two different caravan sites in July/August and didn't get a thing. Talk about the gods of perversion not smiling. I got plenty of sounds and chat, but not one sex sound. I didn't try and record every night, but did for at least 21 nights or more.

Most days I would spend time identifying possible couples and then I would go out when it was dark, leaving the minidisc recording. So that would be about 10.00pm and the minidisc can record up to seven hours. I would then pop out from time to time to see if a light had come on in the caravan's bedroom. When I saw it had, I would go back in, drink some wine and watch TV, or even fall asleep. At about 2.00am I would retrieve the recorder and have a quick listen before going to bed. In the morning I would check out the recording fully and every time there was hopeful sounds/voices, followed by nothing. There wasn't ever a time when it sounded like I'd stopped the recording too early.

Here's a typical example. Towards the end of my stay in the second caravan, a very attractive young couple with a baby and a toddler turned up at the van next to mine. I was really hopeful, but it wasn't to be. The recording on their first night heard them arrive in the bedroom and then babies/children crying. This went on for several hours and the couple must have been up for a large part of the night comforting the kids. The next day they left, having obviously decided that caravanning with little children wasn't much fun. They did return a couple of days later, but my brief hopes were dashed, as it was only to collect some stuff!

While in the first caravan there was a different opportunity, but to say fate was still against me is an understatement! My sister in law visited for a few days and I manoeuvred things so she would sleep in the lounge, where secret recording and quality were great. Knowing she's quite horny after a few wines I was very hopeful a solo session would be on the cards. On the first night I heard her get ready for bed and then a few slight rubbing sounds, followed by her whispering; "Better not tonight!" That really gave me hope for a change of mind later in bed, or the following nights, but 30 mins further into the recording I heard; "Oh fuck, fucking hell!" Her period had started and even though I recorded the following two nights, it had obviously put her off any self enjoyment.

I was fed up with all the negative results is an understatement. I still am to some degree, as I can't think of any possible new opportunities in the near future. Apologies for not having anything to offer from my attempts, but I'll now try and get round to sorting out and posting some of my old material when I get a bit of time.

*shakes head* bad luck mate. I know how frustrating it is for someone who enjoys the chase to get to the end of a stint like that with no payoff.

Would be cool to know more about the hardware you had rigged up if you get time. I've always liked the sound of minidisc as a recording format for our little hobby, but the noisy moving parts made me switch to solid state as soon as I could afford it.

Thanks for the reply. From your comments about understanding the frustration it sounds like you've had similar experiences and know what it feels like.

As far as the equipment is concerned, it was purchased for me about 10 years ago to do some recordings for a theatre project. In truth I forgot I had the stuff and it was only earlier this year, when I needed to record live sounds, that I remembered it. That's what inspired me to find the forum and think about looking for new recording opportunities.

You asked about the equipment and as you probably know the minidisc is no more, although discs and second hand players are available. If I could afford it I would look into digital recorders, but at the moment the Sony produces pretty good results (if the opportunity presents itself, that is). The recorder/player is a very neat and compact Sony Hi-MD Walkman MZ-RH10 and the mic I'm using is a Sony ECM-MS907. I've not attached any images of the equipment as there are plenty of images available via Google.

There are a number of handy features and using Hi-MD 1GB minidiscs you get up to 7 hours of maximum quality recording. In long play I think it's about 30 hours, but the batteries would have summer and the caravans again!

Apolgies for the last paragraph of the previous post seemingly making no sense, but for some reason the board lost a large chunk of the text after I pressed submit????

I'll try and write the missing text again and hope the board doesn't loose it this time. If it's me that's doing anything wrong please let me know what it is.

In reply to the question about equipment, it should have continued something like this;

"There are a number of handy features and using Hi-MD 1GB minidiscs you get up to 7 hours of maximum quality recording. In long play I think it's about 30 hours, but the batteries would have...

run out long before this. With the little AA battery attachment supplied it can record up to about 11 hours continuously. One feature I found very useful was being able to split the recording into tracks as it records. You can set any length and I chose 5 minutes, so instead of a continuous recording of say 4 hours you get 48 tracks. It plays seamlessly, but you can keep hopping to the start of the next track, making searching for those elusive sounds much easier. There are other features, but I've not bothered with any of them.

If anyone does want pics or other info just ask. In the meantime I'm racking my brains to think of new opportunities, so I can post the results and you can hear what it produces for yourselves. I just hope I don't have to wait until next.....

summer and the caravans again!"

Hope that helps make some sense of the ending of the post in reply to the question about equipment.

Hej emmpet8, it is not exactly the board and not exactly you but a quirk of the text editor. Pressing the wrong combination of keys (I didn´t find out which yet) makes the editor jump some lines up and you overwrite the last passages, often without noticing. This happened a few times to me too, not only in this forum software but also in a wordpress text editor.

Thanks for the info. In future I'll do what I should have done earlier and copied it before submitting, just in case.
