How to make sure I get a hotel room with a connecting door?
When I am travelling on business I always hope I can get a connecting door to listen in on folks but how can I make sure I get one WITH a connecting door? I can't just ask for it since it's just me because I wouldn't want them to get suspicious and they usually tend to put singles at the end of a hall in a quiet room with no connecting door. Any suggestions?

Well, you could ask for two rooms when making your reservation and cancel one room later depending on your booking conditions.

I too have suffered the fate of the single traveller - being allocated rooms at the end of corridors away from everyone else. So lately I've taken to booking double rooms for two people, then on arriving at the hotel I've said that my partner is ill so I'm travelling alone. As a result, the last few rooms I've been given have been much better - in amongst the couples.

Good idea, LeStanf. Tried this once and it worked too.

OMC I can't believe you plan this in advance when you're booking your rooms. Im new to this and didn't realize it was so big. I'm going to ask my boss for bigger rooms!

I look at this a bit differently. Whenever I book a double room, I end up in the no action zone. When I book a king bed single, I end up near the good stuff. I can't imagine a loving couple would request a double bed.

Sorry Spock, but what would a loving couple request ???
If not a double room.
By the way, usually single rooms are in each corner of the hotel floors, adjacent to double rooms.

I think we are saying the same thing. There is a difference between North American hotels and European. In the US a "double" usually means 2 beds. I think in Europe a "double" means 2 people share one bed.

I do not understand why no one could get me a double for myself if I want to? It is limited by a policy?

If you´re lucky or there are only doubles available, you´ll get one. But doubles mean more work to do for the service personnel - two beds to make, more floor to clean. Re: How to make sure I get a hotel room with a connecting do
For what it's worth, I've not had any luck with adjoining rooms. I often end up with them, but turns out to be no action on the other side. I keep hoping for it to work out though, as the recording would probably be incredible! One tip I can give that works well for me, is to request a room near the elevator. People don't often want these rooms due to the added noise, but I love them! With a view of the elevator, you get a clear shot of anyone entering your floor. Keep a lookout for couples, then casually enter the hall as they are entering their room. Now you know which room houses a couple, and if you can get away with hallway recording, it takes away some of the guesswork.

Re: How to make sure I get a hotel room with a connecting do
I happened to get an adjoining room a few weeks ago and, not only that, but there were sexsounds coming from it! Seems great, right? Well, not so much. It looks like the hotel spent a LOT of time trying to soundproof between the rooms. The adjoining doors were therefore thick, down tight against the carpet, and sealed up very well on the sides too.
You could hear more from them from my door (and the gap underneath) going out into the hallway than through the connecting door.
So, there might be exceptions to this -- but my guess is that it often isn't worth the hassle of trying to get a connecting door. In my experience, it isn't as good as you'd assume...
I'm also the opposite of Jasonmg when it comes to elevators. I get one far away from them and ice machines because of the sound issues. I'm very sensitive to sounds like that and would hear the motor moving all night. Not worth it to me for the chance of a peek through the peephole at people going by.
I also find that most hotels seem to put people with kids and such near the elevators -- for two reasons: 1. Because people do associate noise with the elevators, so you might as well put the noisey kids there too. And 2. Because then the kids have to walk only a short distance to their rooms (and therefore aren't loud in the hallways).
Therefore, in my opinion, away from the elevators still makes the most sense if you want to get lucky with good sounding neighbors.

Re: How to make sure I get a hotel room with a connecting do
I always book double rooms, it makes no difference to the price usually. I have also found that if I am staying at a hotel I know, I ask for the room I want on the booking form. Failing that, if its a new place, I have often taken a walk round before I book in and selected one or two room numbers. As long as you book in earlier enough the staff will always give you the room you ask for especially as you will be saying you have been before.
A last but very good tip. I keep a packet of fags with me. If I dont like the room I just light one up (watch out for the fire alarms, best to do it with the window open). It only takes a few seconds for the room to smell a bit. I then ring down to reception and say someone has been smoking and I really dont like it - so they move me.
