My experience using a MiniDisc recorder

Post by PKSmith »

Hello to the forum,

as I did introduce myself I was not lucky the last years to catch some sounds in my appartment house.
Though many people live here, it seems the are more interested in just watching TV :(

Here I want to talk about my experience with a MD-Recorder, that might be good alternative
if you have such a recorder left in your house from some years ago...

I have an older MD-Recorder, a Sony MD Walkman MZ-R30, which is a solid metal case device
and that I used for my way to work by bus before I got my first MP3-Player.

What makes the MZ-R30 still valuable for the need of recording my neighbours:
Sony has some types of small condensator microphones you can easily plug in. Easy to get fo
some bucks at ebay.

The record button is a big red knob you can pull, so you can operate this device very easily even in full darkness.

If you record at a high level it is easy to get up even low sounds from the opposite end of the floor, so you
can just open your door a bit and have a good catch without the danger of being caught standing at your neighbour`s door.

The recording level is pretty high and this is the problem:
you can hear even the motor spinning the MD in this decive, so every few seconds there is a small
spinning sound in the recording.

So you have to use an audio cable to get some range between the device and the mic.

Or, as we are all a bit crazy enough - because otherwise we would not be here  -
I manfactured a styropor foam box for the device leaving a gap for the recording button.
This works fine to stop the spinning sound.

As a MD holds up to 74 minutes in standard recording quality you can easily let the recording go on
and wait for the things to happen.

Which unfortunately do not happen any more here in my house. As if they knew I am waiting

Thanks for reading
Peter
