I'm going to start doing this for all of my uploads -- and I really wish that everyone else did too!
Basically, whatever is going to be typed for a description of the file, people should put into the MP3 tags. That way, it is there for easy reference in the future when you've got a pile of MP3s to listen to when not on the web site. I'll likely do this manually to files that I download from now on -- but it would be great if this was more of a "standard" here and everyone did it before they up'ed the MP3s. (Or it was done on the backend when moving them to the archives maybe -- or just as soon as someone posts a new one -- an admin could just go and edit it and add in the description.)
Thoughts?

Re: Put descriptions in the MP3 tags!
JohnGipsy, I really support that!
Thanks for starting this discussion, here are my thoughts:
Although for setting a standard it seems like a good idea if the admin(s) did this, I must confess that this would double the time for maintaining the archives, so I´d prefer the individual solution. Nevertheless I will ask the next admin I come across
There is a great free tool I use for my own files, mainly my music collection but also my recordings: mp3tag. Easy to learn, comfortable to use, many languages included.
Besides the tool and the "who does it" we should also discuss the how-to - meaning which information should go into which tag-fields. There are numerous possible tags but these are the ones that I rate important:
Title: The name of the file or a more descriptive title should go here. If your file is called 001.mp3 a title like "sex with my wife" sounds more appropriate.
Artist: Your username if this is your recording, could also be something else. I used to put "yeppie&tina" in here.
Album: I suggest the category like "motel sex" or maybe better "sexsoundlovers motel sex" ?
Year: Year of recording
Comment: The file´s description, shouldn´t be too long.
Internet: www.sexsoundlovers.cc (please)

Re: Put descriptions in the MP3 tags!
I agree -- it shouldn't be the admin's job -- I'd much rather see people doing it themselves, of course.
One comment on what you suggested... I don't think the "comment" field should be short at all. My whole point was that that field should be used for whatever the person normally types into their post -- a description of the event or circumstances. So, I'd like people to fill that field up as they please with the details -- so that it is forever attached to the sound itself instead of just in the forum post here.
ID3v1 tags are severely limited (like 30 characters for the fields) -- but ID3v2 grows as needed for the data. So, someone could easily put a nice descriptive paragraph into the comment field there.

So Id3v2 has no character limitations?
How do you display the comment field when playing mp3 files? I´m usually playing them in winamp and I don´t see a good way to show the comment field.

Correct. I believe.yeppie wrote:So Id3v2 has no character limitations?
Just right-click to bring up the File Info (or Alt-3) and go to the ID3v2 tab. The "Comment" field there is what you'd want to use.How do you display the comment field when playing mp3 files? I´m usually playing them in winamp and I don´t see a good way to show the comment field.

Yes, I know about the ID3 editor in winamp. I was looking for a way to automatically show the descriptions in the comment field when playing a soundfile. Any ideas?JohnGypsy wrote:Just right-click to bring up the File Info (or Alt-3) and go to the ID3v2 tab. The "Comment" field there is what you'd want to use.

Not sure on that. I haven't used it, but I hear that this WinAmp skin will actually allow you to display ID3 comments while playing.
