Bad Experience - Don't Drink and Record
I've been pretty quiet for a year since this experience, but will tell a bit now as it was a year ago. Not said anything before in case a knock came on my door. Still leaving quite a few details out as I don't want to tempt fate.
It was a caravan park on a hot night in 2013. During the day I'd spotted an attractive couple in a caravan that was a reasonable target. Thought they had potential so later I was waiting for it to get dark, but had already started my device recording. I was sat outside watching their caravan and happily drinking wine. This made me quite chatty as dog walkers wondered past and said hello. Being a twerp because of the drink that meant I was recording myself chatting!
Not long after it got dark the couple's bedroom light came on. With no-one around I went and placed the recorder under their open window. As I did I clearly heard a female moan and a small gasp. I then returned to sitting, watching and drinking more wine. Their bedroom light stayed on for about 20 mins and then went out. I didn't want to miss anything else so left the recorder where it was.
After about 25 mins I saw another bedroom light come on in another caravan not far away. At that point I got greedy and moved the device to under that bedroom window, even though the lounge lights were still on. I then went inside my caravan and fell asleep watching TV (the wine). I woke up in the dark early hours and straight away went to retrieve the recorder. Only to find the caravan with all the lights out and the recorder gone!
Talk about a sinking (and sobering) feeling in my gut. I didn't get much sleep and was up very early to have a quick look in the light but it was gone. So I lost a great recording from the first caravan and some very expensive gear, but it was the horrible feeling of possible consequences that was worst. I had a terrible feeling all that day and the next few, but still was big time worried. Then I started to hope that if I didn't hear anything up until the site closing for the season their might be a chance. I didn't dare think I'd got away with it though. I wouldn't even risk thinking it now after a year, because as I said earlier I don't want to tempt fate.
I have to admit though I've felt more relieved as time has passed, but it brings back bad feelings when I think about it and even while writing this. It hasn't put me off trying again this year (no luck though), but this time I had a more sober approach.

Re: Bad Experience - Don't Drink and Record
Jeepers, I got nervous butterflies just reading this, can only imagine how edgy you must've felt over the next couple of days being on site.
One decoy I've used a few times is to leave other items with the recorder. You have to choose wisely depending on how safe the environment is (in other words, how likely these things are to get stolen), but it seems like a casual "oh thanks, been looking for those for hours" would be accepted much easier if it wasn't only a recorder they were holding. Call me crazy, but in very safe environments I've even gone so far as to leave something that makes the mishmash of seemingly abandoned belongings identifiable as mine, because really, who would be dumb enough to do that if they had any kind of creepy hidden agenda in play? The idea is a double bluff that presupposes your innocence and would probably make most people feel like they were being overly paranoid to push for detail. I should point out though that these are mainly untested theories, and they hinge on the ability to act casual in the face of potential discovery and the audiovoyeur being careful about what other content is on that recorder. Personally, I usually do leave some content, but it's always totally innocent things that give the impression that the recorder gets used for its intended purpose... just in case anyone plugs it in to check. I think in this scenario, being identified but seemingly innocent is a much better position to find yourself in than being unidentified but the person who makes the discovery realising that there's an ulterior motive present. The former would likely be passed over by most people, but the latter gets peoples suspicions going. These musings probably apply less in a hotel situation or anywhere where the discoverer might be picking up the dropped device with their professional hat on.
Stay safe out there kids. And sober, that too!

Re: Bad Experience - Don't Drink and Record
Thanks Scott, some really interesting idea and well worth thinking about for certain situations. I'll give it a lot of thought for some sound related things I've been considering recently. In a caravan park late at night though, it would be difficult to explain leaving stuff. In the circumstances I actually had a different approach and that was a fairly good explanation ready if anyone asked why I was wandering about in the dark.sc0tt-uk wrote:

I did say in my post I would leave out details, but will briefly explain what my backup plan was. Apart from my 'other' interests I'm also genuinely interested in wildlife. To that end I carried a piece of kit that is not in any way linked to any voyeuristic activities, but is of genuine interest for nocturnal wildlife. I'd rather not say what it is, but I was known for using it around the caravan park and in a positive way I might add.
In the incident I'm talking about it became a big potential problem. That was because as I said, I had already set the sound device to record and it was recording when I chatted to the odd dog walker. While I was waiting (and drinking wine) I also had the wildlife kit and I did chat to a person about it. By doing so I potentially identified myself to quite a few people who knew me. That made me extra jittery after the equipment disappeared.
I will still use the wildlife kit as potential cover in outdoor circumstances, but will also remember to stay mute and of course to stay sober. I'll also try to remind myself not to be greedy.
Thanks again for the suggestions Scott.

In hotels the best thing to do (if you're not actually spotted standing by a door looking furtive) is just to walk confidently towards the nearest stairs or lift. Once you are out of sight you can listen for the door closing and go back to your listening post. People generally don't take an interest in others unless they are acting like they're trying to hide something.

Re: Bad Experience - Don't Drink and Record
I have often thought that it is a shame that someone outside of like the CIA does not make a little USB recorder that writes to a hidden partition on the flash chip but would allow you to put a few files in the part you can see if you just plug it in. You could record a meeting at work and put it in the place you can see and if the device were ever found, chances are that the finder, even if they did plug it in, would just hear the boring work related stuff and bail on it as anything interesting.
That brings up a big question though. If you are out in a public place and you stumble across a USB drive, what would you do with it? Try and find the owner, or take it home and see what is on it?

Got to be honest, I would take it home and look unless it was obvious who the owner was.reggind wrote:That brings up a big question though. If you are out in a public place and you stumble across a USB drive, what would you do with it? Try and find the owner, or take it home and see what is on it?
Recently I did come across some Mini DV tapes that were being thrown out. I have to admit to taking them home and having a look. Some had kids on so I destroyed and binned them, but two had a young couple videoing themselves having sex. Quite interesting.

Re: Bad Experience - Don't Drink and Record
As a sound pervert I would deffo take home a hidden recorder if I suspected the content would be related to what I use them for. (and share with you guys if there was anything interesting on).
As for OPs story: mate I can imagine your fear! Over the past 2 years I have lost about 6 usb stick recorders, all (but 1) within roughly 500 yards from my house. Just leaving the in residential gardens under a bush or something under an open window. Next day they'd be gone, imagine me feeling there in broad daylight in front of their house only hours after they obviously found it doing some gardening or something. Sheer luck that no-one has ever ran out to confront me. What I'd say? No idea! Although I too have thought of the excuse that i'd be recording the sound of fighting foxes and a woodpecker that can be heard near our park.
Any better stories, please advise ASAP! Actually I am quite surprised that on a forum like this we have not even helped eachother with these kind of things, especially because having a good bull shit story is very important.

Re: Bad Experience - Don't Drink and Record
OOps, that quote was from someone later on in the thread than me. I just asked if you found a device, what would you do with it?
Oddly enough years ago when 8mm cam corders were the rage, I got one and me and a GF made a sex tape. It was pretty hot too. Her sucking me and getting me good and hot and than my eating her and sticking a big ol dildo in her hot little hole and than getting her down on her hands and knees and screwing her ass doggie style with the dildo still in her pussy. It was really quite dirty and lots of fun. Lots of ass slapping and she had long hair so there was lots of grabbing her by her hair and I made sure her chest was head was just low enough and her ass was just high enough that her nipples would rub on the sheets when I plunged in.
Anyway, she did not trust me with the tape, so she hung on to it. She put it in her purse and than proceeded to loose her purse. She accused me of taking it. Really? I had no idea what had happened to it. We drifted apart and sometime over a year later got together again kind of as casual fuck mates and one night we went out to get dinner and this wateriness who was not the one for our table comes over and says hi and tells us that she had been waiting for us to come in for over a year because last time we were there, she forgot her purse there, and all that time the wateriness remembered us. I got a huge laugh out of it. She was so mortified she would not eat. She was sure (and probably correctly so) that every person who worked there for the last year or so must have seen "the" tape. Oh, the look on her face was *precious*..

Re: Bad Experience - Don't Drink and Record
Like your honesty on the recorder and empathise with how you must have felt when each of those sticks went missing. I know how it feels to stand looking at a space where the device was! Don't make the idiotic mistake I made and have it recording from leaving your place, especially while drinking. I did it as it was easier to set it recording in the light. This was because on a previous occasion I had left it 'recording' a great opportunity, only to find it was playing rather than recording when I returnedfindu wrote:As a sound pervert I would deffo take home a hidden recorder if I suspected the content would be related to what I use them for. As for the 'bull shit story' I think wildlife is about the best in these circumstances. Might be an idea to actually record/download some wildlife stuff so you can play it back if someone does confront you. At least it might add some credence, but it's still a risky business.
On the nice idea of helping one another I've got a question, but will post it in the 'Sound Related' section soon.

Re: Bad Experience - Don't Drink and Record
It was a skip and the people had done a runner after not paying rent, so the landlord was clearing the loft and throwing it all away. I spotted a bag with a cam and the tapes, so asked and was allowed to take it. The cam was obsolete and useless as the battery had welded itself on!findu wrote:Wow, lucky man! Well done. As for sharing I've no objection, but can't do it through this forum. Maybe I could send an upload link in a reply to a message? I won't do it until I'm sure it doesn't break any forum rules. Let me know if it does Yeppie.
Whether it's worth sending is another matter. It's dead genuine and that's what I like, but quality isn't great. Also there's only about ten mins in total from two nights on a caravan holiday I think. The first is bits of her doing oral and riding him. The second is foreplay and then it stopped. I guess the battery ran out and who knows, it might have been the moment it welded itself to the cam!

Re: Bad Experience - Don't Drink and Record
Hi, yes I meant emmpet8.
More 'fun' stories. Appreciate it. Did she get bag her purse?
After 2 years of lurking around under open windows in summer months without any succes (and losing about 6 usb recorders in the process, clearly found by the house owners before my return), earlier this summer I got lucky at last and overheard a great session under an open window a bit futher away where houses are smaller, cheaper and closer to the rod/pavement. I also planted 2 recorders: 1 standard usb recorder and a new one I had just purchased which was a recorder and mp3 player in 1 (which is a better coverup when someone finds it under their window). After rushing home to listen I found that the quality of the mp3 recorder was absolute shite and that the other usb hadn't recorded at all. But at least I now had an address to return to!
A week later or so I decided to return (had also left a recorder overnight in the week but no luck/action) and placed 2 recorders in their tiny front garden. I wanted to place them behind a bag of cement or sand or something, when that didn't really work I placed them behind an old scruffy football which must have been left in there for many seasons, judging by the state of it. So it all took a little longer and I was hanging over the front wall around 9:30 PM when it was still light. 3 houses down they were packing furniture in a van and at the time I placed the 2 recorders the guy was reverse parking towards me.
When I came back at 6 AM the next morning the ball had been moved and both the recorders were gone. Came back a minute later to double check but no. Luckily I did not have anything on them to link back to me but the neighbour may have spotted me who also did see my face. And of course I had now 'lost' the address I was so excited about in the first place and of course 2 recorders. Absolutely gutted.
I did walk past on another summer evening like 6 weeks later only to find that the couple were in their bedroom but no longer with the window open..
