Sound - Much Harder To Capture Than Visual Stuff

I think this forum is great but although I’ve tried hard over the last few years I never seem to be able to record any material for posting. Lots of circumstances, but I think the main one being no access to action taking place inside.

By contrast I’ve personally found that collecting visual voyeuristic stuff to be quite easy (still risky though). Maybe it’s because you don’t have to get up close with some of the optical zooms on cameras nowadays. A relatively inexpensive one I use has a 50x optical zoom and nice lens quality too. As far as I know there’s no equivalent cheap super zoom audio device. Even if there was I’m not sure it would work for what we want anyway.

As far as sound is concerned, after loosing some gear over a year ago I purchased a small Olympus voice recorder . It can record over 24 hours continuously and the sound quality from the built in mics is not bad for the price I paid. It also has a small black fabric case that makes it fairly inconspicuous However, having spent a lot of summer nights leaving it near caravan bedrooms and similar I still didn’t get any of the ‘sounds’ we want.

Summer is now over so that means no chance of capturing anything with it until next year, unless anyone can suggest anything. Potentially I could leave the device somewhere and return over 24 hours later to collect. I would even be prepared to take the risk of loosing it unless the risk was high. So if anyone has any suggestions of where and how, I’d appreciate hearing about them.
