It is funny sometimes thinking back on things from when you were younger.
At one point in time we lived in an apartment complex. The units had a common laundry in the basement and storage cages, one for each unit. This was the only "finished" part of the basement. It had a ceiling and a cement floor. Under the rest of the units, my friend and I discovered a wooden hatch that was just friction fit that led into a crawl space under the rest of the apartments. It was somewhat of a maze of plumbing pipes and wires. We used to hang out down there like it was our fort. We kept quiet as we knew if we got caught we would get in trouble though at that age (perhaps 5 or 6) we really could not figure out why. Heh, thinking back on that now. What a place for a sound voyeur. I wonder if it is still like that. It is half way across the country, but my guess is that it is.

Why wouldn't you go there and tell us!
Unless you need to become a child again, in order to crawl in this space...

Re: Back when I was a kid...
I would love to, but I live roughly 600 miles from there now. The space is probably still there, if the building is still there. It is like an access hatch for plumbers and electricians. I would not be surprised if it has a lock or something on it now. Back in the day, as my friend and I discovered, it was friction fit.
