I spent all night last Saturday walking up and down hotel room catching all the sounds. I got lucky because they were having maintenance issues on one floor, so they moved a lot of people to my floor. There was a lot going on in multiple rooms and I felt so lucky recording with my Iphones. I get home and there is huge amounts of bass/humming and barely any sex sounds. I was so disappointing. Such a lucky night ended up with such shitty recordings.
I am finally thinking about getting a recorder, plus I won't have to walk around. Can someone recommend a decent recorder, that can pick up sounds you can't hear by ear? My first pixel phone was able to do this, picked up sounds I didn't even hear. The iPhone how ever is terrible at this.
It's time I invest in a recorder.. Iphone isn't cutting it.

Gekko is probably the worlds greatest authority on doing what you are trying to do, and he is on this very site. If you search for him, and list his postings, a while back he went over what he brings to a hunt. If you read his postings you can learn a lot about how he works his magic. He is very open about it. He loves a good cap as much as the rest of us! You often times see him complementing first timers.

I have a basic ipod which is brilliant for recording. Picks up faint noices and never has any static feedback. Only problem Isi have to stay with it isn't easy to hide. I do have a few USBs but they tend to have loud static unless the sound itself is quite loud. Not sure this helps any

I find the £9.99 USBs you can buy on Amazon to be just great. While the recording quality isn't as fine as you'll get from an expensive voice recorder, it's good enough for most hotel situations and the small size and low cost of the units makes them ideal for public places.
One extra tip I learned from Gekko is to use double sided sticky tape to secure the USBs in discrete places. Also, keep a stock of some black and some white USBs to give you more flexibility in concealing them. The white ones tend to be more expensive though so I've taken to painting some of the black ones with modelling paint (taking care not to paint over the microphone). I'd say 90% of my recordings over the last year have been made using these painted USBs.

I’ve had some good results using both iPhone and iPod.
The trick is to put it on the floor rather than to stand holding it otherwise it picks up the sounds of your movement.
Ideally tuck the bottom (where the microphone is) under the door - this is where an iPod touch works better as its slimmer.
I did once hide an iPod on the lintel over a mid corridor fire door, but it wasn’t very successful as the microphone picked up every sound in the corridor rather than the very loud sex sounds from the nearby room
